Privacy & your data
Can Orbit read my notes?
No. Orbit's database is encrypted on your iPhone. If you turn on iCloud sync, your people, notes, dates, gifts, places and photos are end-to-end encrypted before they leave, so only your devices can read them: not Apple, and not us.
Why do I need an account?
Your Orbit account holds what you sign in with (Sign in with Apple, Google or email) and your subscription. Nothing about your people. Your orbit itself lives on your devices and, if you choose, in your own iCloud.
What can Apple see when I sync?
Apple can see how much you store and when it changes, but not what it says. Even the record names are scrambled.
Does Orbit use analytics?
Orbit shares basic usage, like which screens and features get used, to help us improve it. It never includes anything you've written, who's in your orbit or how many people you have. Your IP address isn't kept. You can turn it off any time with "Share how Orbit is used" in Settings.
Can I lock Orbit?
Yes. Turn on App Lock to require Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, and choose how soon it locks. Orbit is hidden in the app switcher by default, and private notes stay hidden until you unlock them. Reminders and widgets keep working.
Can I export or delete my data?
Yes. Export everything on your device as a zip (keep it somewhere safe, because the file itself isn't encrypted). You can also erase Orbit from a device, or delete your account from inside the app.
Sync & devices
Does Orbit work on iPad?
Yes, on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later. Turn on iCloud sync and your orbit appears on both. On iPad, your orbit and each person's page sit side by side.
Is iCloud sync on by default?
No. Nothing leaves your iPhone unless you turn it on. Orbit offers it during setup, and you can switch it on or off in Settings.
What if I lose my phone?
If you use iCloud sync, sign in on a new device with the same Apple Account and your data comes back. Your encryption keys travel through iCloud Keychain. Because only you hold the keys, we can't recover your data for you. If you don't sync, export a backup from time to time.
Is Orbit coming to Android?
It's on the way. Join the Android waitlist and we'll email you when it's ready. [CONFIRM: whether Android will sync with iPhone, and how.]
Opal, the assistant
What does Opal do?
It's part of Orbit Pro. Ask for gift ideas, things to ask someone, help with a plan, or just chat about up to five people at once. If it suggests something, like a gift or a date, it's only added when you tap it.
What's sent, and to whom?
Nothing is sent until you turn Opal on. When you ask a question, Orbit swaps real names for labels like "Person A" on your iPhone and sends the relevant details through our server in Sydney to OpenAI. Private notes, photos, links, addresses, map pins, phone numbers and emails are never sent. Our server keeps usage counts, never what you asked.
Does OpenAI keep my questions?
OpenAI keeps each request and its answer for up to 30 days to check for misuse, then deletes them. It doesn't use them to train its models.
Can I keep someone out of it?
Yes. Choose "Keep out of Opal" on anyone's page. You can also review every question before it's sent, and see what was shared afterwards.
Orbit Pro
Is Orbit free?
Yes, for up to 8 people plus you, with sync, reminders, widgets, themes and App Lock included. Orbit Pro adds unlimited people, Opal the assistant, the weekly check-in and suggestions from their notes. See pricing.
What happens if I stop paying?
Nothing is deleted or hidden, and you can still edit everyone. Adding more people needs Pro again, and the Pro-only features pause.
How do I cancel?
If you subscribed on the web, cancel from your Orbit account page. If you subscribed in the app, go to iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Either way, you keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for.
Can I subscribe on the web?
Yes, at the same price as the app. Start your free trial here, then sign in to the Orbit app with the same account and Pro is ready.
Using Orbit
How do birthday reminders work?
They're scheduled on your iPhone. By default, you'll get one at 9am on the day and another a week before, and you can change both. Notifications say "Someone in your orbit has a birthday today" unless you choose to show names.
Can I import from my contacts?
Yes, without giving Orbit access to your contacts. You pick people in the system picker, and Orbit copies their name, nickname and birthday (and photo, if you'd like). Later changes in Contacts won't appear in Orbit.
What do the widgets show?
The Upcoming birthdays widget shows the next birthdays in your orbit, on your Home Screen or Lock Screen. In Settings, choose names and dates, dates only, or nothing at all.
Can I change how Orbit looks?
Yes. Choose from four themes: Nebula, Aurora, Ember and Daybreak. All are free.
